Falls remain the leading cause of injury-related emergency department visits and hospitalizations among adults over 65 in Palm Beach County, accounting for more than 8,000 ED visits and 2,400 hospital admissions annually. Despite being largely preventable, fall-related injuries continue to exact a devastating toll on the county's senior population.
The statistics are stark: one in four adults over 65 falls each year, and falls are the leading cause of traumatic brain injury and hip fracture in this age group. In Palm Beach County, where roughly 25 percent of the population is over 65, the public health impact is substantial.
Risk Factors
Common risk factors include medication side effects (particularly from blood pressure drugs, sedatives, and certain antidepressants), balance and gait disorders, vision impairment, and environmental hazards like loose rugs and poor lighting. Vitamin D deficiency, prevalent in older adults despite Florida's abundant sunshine, also contributes to fall risk through its effects on muscle strength and bone density.
"Many of my patients assume that living in Florida and spending time outdoors means they get enough vitamin D, but testing frequently shows otherwise," said Dr. Samuel Rubin, a geriatrician at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center. "Older skin is less efficient at producing vitamin D from sunlight, and many seniors avoid sun exposure due to skin cancer concerns."
Prevention Programs
The Palm Beach County Health Department operates a falls prevention program that includes free in-home safety assessments, exercise classes focused on balance and strength, and medication review consultations. The evidence-based Tai Chi for Arthritis program, offered at multiple community centers, has been shown to reduce fall risk by up to 55 percent.
Medicare covers an annual wellness visit that includes fall risk assessment, and many insurance plans cover physical therapy for balance training.
