A sobering report from the Florida Department of Health reveals that emergency department visits for mental health crises among adolescents aged 12 to 17 increased by 42 percent statewide between 2021 and 2025. Palm Beach County, the state's third most populous county, has been particularly affected, prompting school districts and healthcare providers to launch new intervention programs.
The School District of Palm Beach County has partnered with the Southeast Florida Behavioral Health Network to place licensed mental health counselors in every high school and middle school by the end of the current academic year. The initiative, funded through a combination of state grants and county health department resources, aims to provide early intervention before crises escalate.
Root Causes
Experts point to multiple contributing factors, including social media's impact on self-image and social comparison, academic pressure, post-pandemic adjustment difficulties, and increased exposure to community violence. A survey of Palm Beach County high school students found that 38 percent reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, up from 27 percent in 2019.
"What we're seeing is not a single cause but a convergence of stressors that today's adolescents face in ways previous generations did not," explained Dr. Patricia Hernandez, chief of adolescent psychiatry at the Palm Beach Children's Hospital. "Social media in particular has created a 24/7 social environment with no off switch."
Resources for Families
Parents seeking support can contact the county's 211 helpline for mental health referrals. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 by calling or texting 988. Several local nonprofits, including the Mental Health Association of Palm Beach County, offer free support groups for teens and their families.
